Signs Your Foot Pain Is Serious

    Swelling

  • Swelling, particularly of the feet, may occur in patients with diabetes. However, various conditions can cause swelling, including rheumatoid arthritis and cirrhosis, which swell your legs because of fluid accumulation in the body. However, if swelling is accompanied by redness, warmth, tenderness, or pain, it may be a symptom of an infection. Infection is a common complication in your toes when you have ingrown toenails.
  • A sensation of weight in your feet: Your foot feels heavier than normal, and you may also experience tenderness when you walk. A sense of weight in your feet is often accompanied by swelling and stiffness. You may even notice that your ankle is wider than usual. All of these are signs of edema and circulation problems.
  • Tingling: The feeling of tingling in your feet is often a sign of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is an umbrella term for nerve damage in which the nerves are not working correctly. Tingling can range from a mild sensation of pins and needles to numbness and burning, and it may be felt in the toes, fingers, hands, arms, legs, or trunk. The most common form of peripheral neuropathy is diabetic neuropathy. It occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin to help the brain get glucose (blood sugar) from the blood.
