Acromegaly

Another cause of sleep apnea is Acromegaly. It is also an endocrine disorder that can cause obstructive sleep apnea. It is a rare disease, but in this condition, a benign tumor develops in the pituitary gland. This causes excess secretion of growth hormone that results in overgrowth of bone, soft tissues, and cartilage. The excess of soft tissue in the facial area increases the chances of developing sleep apnea up to 80%. Increase bone and cartilage thickness in the upper airway cause obstruction in the passage of oxygen during sleeping. Acromegaly not only causes sleep apnea but also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
