Stroke incidence is higher in men than in women. However, about 61% of mortalities due to stroke are women. This is commonly attributed to the age factor. Women tend to live longer than men and a greater chance to advance age also exposes them to the stroke risk that comes with age.

An investigation attributed the increased mortality in women to a delay in the dispensation of acute stroke treatment to the women. It was hypothesized that this delay in recognition of symptoms as stroke and timely arrival to the hospital could be because of non-traditional stroke presentations in women. The result of the study points out the following symptoms that defy the norm seen in men. A greater percentage of women patients presented with these non-traditional symptoms as opposed to men. Women mostly suffer from the hemorrhagic stroke that is due to the rupture of blood vessels. This may in part be responsible for these selective non-traditional occurrences of symptoms. It is crucial to identify stroke with these symptoms in both genders, to ensure timely medical care.

Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are among the predominant signs of stroke in women.

Hiccups

Another sign hinting towards the gender disparity in symptoms is hiccups. Women tend to have hiccups with the onset of stroke, an uncommon sign in men.
