Causes of stroke in women
Oral contraceptives
Oral contraceptives have exogenous hormones as components. Particularly, estrogen has a metabolic effect on the liver that promotes thrombogenesis overall. It stimulates the liver to secrete a greater number of clotting factors. Hence stroke, which is a thromboembolic event can be an associated result of contraceptive use. Reportedly, contraceptive use increases stroke risk by three times.
