Femoral Fractures

This type of fracture is managed similarly to other fractures, with immobilization and anti-inflammatory treatment to relieve thigh pain. Femoral fractures usually trigger hip or knee pain when located near the femur’s end. When it is located right in the center of the femur, it is generally due to stress fractures caused by a combination of overuse and bone weakness.

Management of stress fractures is also similar, and non-weight-bearing immobilization is considered one of the most important treatments, especially in high-risk patients. Stress fractures do not always require surgical intervention, but if the problem persists or the alteration is not reducible by conservative means, it should go through surgery.

Surgery is also the only option in open fractures of the femur, which are usually due to high-energy trauma and constitute an emergency surgery due to the risk of bleeding after a rupture of the femoral artery.
