Referred Pain

There are many causes of referred pain in the thighs. One of the most common is kidney stones. It can be felt in your thighs when the kidney stone comes down through the urethra. The pain can be very severe, and sometimes there is little you can do at home to treat the problem.

Treating thigh pain in patients with kidney stones often requires staying in an emergency room and receiving endovenous anti-inflammatory treatment. Some patients will need hospitalization to receive IV fluids and medications for a more extended period to prevent further kidney stone formation. A number of medications have been used to treat this type of pain. These include NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, paracetamol (acetaminophen), or even steroids.
