Blood or Platelet Transfusions

The blood transfusion process is performed to stop the bleeding in thrombocytopenic patients. There are two primary types of platelet products that can be transfused. One is whole blood platelets derived from four to five whole blood donations and then tested and irradiated. The second is apheresis platelets derived from the donor, and it is most commonly used. In this procedure, a needle is inserted in the blood vessel’s intravenous line, and through this line, you receive healthy platelets. Blood transfusion is a common procedure performed in patients of thrombocytopenia.
