Splenectomy

This surgery is performed for the removal of the spleen. It is the small organ present under the rib cage in the upper left side of the abdomen behind the stomach. Surgery is most recommended when medicines do not work and are mostly an option for adults suffering from immune thrombocytopenia. As in immune thrombocytopenia, the antibody-coated platelets are removed from the circulation through the spleen. So when the spleen is removed, his platelets remain in the bloodstream. However, as the spleen is the main site for the production of antibody, therefore, removing it will also reduce the number of platelet antibodies along with the removal of antibody-coated platelets. Mostly it is performed if non-surgical treatments fail to reduce the disorder
