Tinnitus can be stemming from a local problem in the ear. For this purpose, the physician examines the ear. Firstly, it involves the outer part of the ear, including the ear canal, which is primarily examined for the presence and character of ear wax. Afterwards, the tympanic membrane is examined by tympanometry or simple otoscopy. Any abnormality in the sound conduction ability, and physiological structure of the membrane is looked for. A thorough inspection is done to negate the possibility of an ear infection, a tumor or other deformity.
