Habituation is generally a component of behavioral therapy. It is a psychological phenomenon where emotional response to something is diminished. As tinnitus is a highly subjective experience, the response to it determines its severity. Habituation is a simple maneuver by way of which tinnitus becomes a tolerable experience. With time, the brain stops registering tinnitus as a nuisance, and starts cancelling tinnitus just as it cancels any other background noise. It can be a time-taking and frustrating procedure, but proper counselling can help in decreasing the occurrence of tinnitus related side-effects.
