Treating cardiovascular diseases
The antioxidant activity of vitamin C helps in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin C has the ability to reduce monocyte adherence to the endothelium and decreasing vascular smooth-muscle cell apoptosis, improving endothelium-dependent nitric oxide formation. All of these steps lead to the prevention of plaque instability in atherosclerosis thus treating cardiovascular conditions. The oxidative damage involving the oxidative alteration of low-density lipoproteins is a leading of cardiovascular disease development and the antioxidant properties of vitamin C limits the oxidative damage to a certain extent.
