Biologically saying, carbohydrates are the molecules that consist of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms in particular ratios. But in the world of nutrition, they are one of the most exclusive topics. Some believe consuming less carbohydrate is the way to moderate health, while others think that higher-carb diets. Still, others force moderation is the way to go. Doesn’t matter where you fall in this discussion, it’s hard to say no that carbohydrates play an essential role in the human body. Here are the key functions of carbohydrates in the following:
Energy source and storage
Carbohydrates broke down to specifically glucose are the preferred energy source of our body, as cells in our muscle, brain, and all other tissues use directly monosaccharides for their energy requirements. Relying on the kind, a gram of carbohydrates offers various amounts of energy:
- Sugars and starches are the main energy-giving carbohydrates and provide 4 kilocalories (17 kilojoules) per gram
- Polyols give 2.4 kilocalories (10 kilojoules) (erythritol is not digestible at all, and thus provides 0 calories)
- Dietary fiber provides 2 kilocalories (8 kilojoules)
