During this type of diagnostic exam, the doctor puts a few drops of a drug called tropicamide in order to dilate or increase the size of the pupil of the eye. When the pupils are dilated the doctor inspects the eye with the help of a special microscope called an ophthalmoscope.  This detailed view allows the doctor to look at the back of the eye, retina and at the back of the lens for diagnosing cataracts. This test is a painless procedure and it is easy for the doctor to interpret the results.

Disadvantages of retinal exam:

  • The drops used to dilate pupil can cause irritation and increase the pressure in the eyes.
  • Sometimes, the light that is used can cause damage to the eye.
