25% of the total cataracts are due to genetic abnormalities. Genetic abnormalities such as Lowe syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 2 can lead to cataract.

Lowe syndrome:

It is also known as oculocerebrorenal syndrome. It is a multisystem disorder which, in addition to cerebral and renal involvement also affects the eyes, and leads to cataract formation inside the eyes. Most children have cataracts in both eyes.

Neurofibromatosis type 2:

It is a genetic disorder of the nervous system. It leads to cataracts in the eyes or different types of eye related disorder. 80% of people having NF2 develop juvenile posterior subscapsular cataracts.
