Complications
These risk factors typically associated with meningitis:
- Hearing loss
- Seizures
- Memory problems
- Vision loss
- Migraine headaches
- Arthritis
- Hydrocephalus
- Brain damage
- A subdural empyema (buildup of clear fluid or pus between the brain and the skull)
- Meningitis may produce and spread bacteria in the bloodstream. These bacteria release toxins and cause leaking of blood into the organs and skin.
A severe form of meningitis may cause gangrene (dying of body tissues due to lack of blood supply) can be life-threatening. Amputation may be necessary in rare cases to avoid spreading of gangrene.
