Rash

Often times, meningitis due to meningococcal bacteria will cause skin rashes and itching, especially in toddlers and babies. It may cause a bulge in the skull on the top of the heads of the young kids. Rashes appear as a result of rapidly multiplying bacteria in the bloodstream. They release poisons and other chemicals that begin to damage blood vessels and skin cells, resulting in the appearance of rashes on the body.

Most doctors use Tumbler Test (or Glass Test) to check if the rash might be caused by meningitis. You can also do this test at home by pressing a clear drinking glass firmly against the affected skin with one or several of the rashes. If the skin was just irritated due to some non-meningitis cause and a rash developed, it would disappear with the pressure of the glass. However, seek medical attention immediately if the marks stay the same after applying the pressure (i.e., you can clearly appreciate them through the glass).
