4 Problems That Are Linked to Astigmatism
Complications of uncorrected astigmatism are common and may lead to troublesome eye conditions. These include: (10)
Adaptive convergent squint
After 2 to 3 years, accommodative convergent squint usually occurs after a lot of accommodation.
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
One eye only suffers from amblyopia, a form of poor vision. Lazy eye occurs when the brain and eye do not work together properly and the brain cannot perceive what the eye sees. Untreated astigmatism can cause several types of amblyopia, including anisotropic amblyopia, strabismus amblyopia, and ametropic amblyopia. This complication is commonly seen in children with uncorrected unilateral astigmatism.
Lid diseases
Rubbing the astigmatic eyes repeatedly may result in lid diseases, such as chalazion, blepharitis, and styles.
Primary narrow angle glaucoma
Astigmatism is characterized by a small, globular eye. With age, the lens becomes larger. As a result, the already small eye is more likely to develop narrow angle glaucoma. This is a potentially serious and emergency surgical condition of the eye that requires immediate medical attention. If ignored or left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss. Therefore, surgical intervention sometimes becomes necessary to the loss of vision.
