Random Chance
So far, researchers cannot determine the exact cause of Down syndrome. That leaves chance as the predictable culprit. Down syndrome can affect children born to parents of all socioeconomic classes, ages, and races. There is no way to completely cut out the chances that you can give birth to a child with Down syndrome, although certain factors, such as maternal age, can increase the likelihood. However, there are so many older women whose children are born perfectly healthy. Testing during or before your pregnancy or genetic counseling can help you gain more knowledge about your chance.
