Heart Problems

Often, children with Down syndrome face heart-related defects and problems. However, sometimes, children are born with heart problems, and it is estimated that up to half of all individuals with Down’s syndrome will be affected by them. An atrioventricular septal defect is one of the most common heart-related problems. A condition in which there is a hole present within the muscles that separates the chambers in the heart. This causes the abnormal blood flow in the heart and can cause detrimental problems for overall health. If this abnormality is detected in the early stages, corrective surgery is possible.
