Heredity is not a factor in most Down syndrome cases, but a few instances are linked to parents who may carry a specific type of chromosome. This specific chromosome is called a translocated chromosome and leads to one of the types of Down syndrome. Although this type is rare, proper genetic counseling can still help determine if this incidence may apply to you. Research has not yet found the exact cause behind these cell division errors, but you can talk to your doctor if you are concerned that this condition may run in your family.
