What is Down Syndrome?

Translocation Trisomy 21

Translocation Trisomy 21

Down syndrome can also be caused by translocation, although it is not usually as common as standard trisomy 21. When translocation trisomy 21 occurs, there are still 46 chromosomes in the cells, just as present in an average person. However, a copy of part or all of the 21st chromosome will get attached to another chromosome within the cell. This then causes Down syndrome traits in translocation. Translocation can also be inherited or random, Like trisomy 21. Patients usually show all of the cognitive and physical symptoms of Down syndrome, even if it is caused by this genetic complication.
