Before undergoing the surgery, you must discuss each and every detail with your doctor in order to reach the best result of the treatment and recovery. Some important points to discuss are:

Breast cancer

Although the chances of breast cancer in males are only 1%, but it must be made sure that the enlargement of the breast is due to gynecomastia and it’s not breast cancer. For this purpose, the doctor will advise you to undergo a series of different ultrasounds and MRI.

Underlying disease

In many cases the gynecomastia goes away on its own, or with few medications, but often times it is triggered by other health conditions. In these situations, the other health conditions are dealt with first, in order to treat gynecomastia. For example, if the gynecomastia is caused by liver cirrhosis, normal functioning of the liver must be restored, and same goes for gynecomastia secondary to malnutrition, hypogonadism etc.
