Swollen face in hemolytic uremic syndrome is a common cause for concern for patients and parents. Most people with HUS have swelling and irritation of the face, tongue, gums, eyes, and throat. In severe cases, the swollen area can spread to the neck and upper body. The condition also causes small red spots in the whites of your eyes, pallor (whiteness) of your skin, and painful swelling in your groin, abdomen, wrists or hands.
