Swollen limbs in hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) are the result of abnormalities of red blood cells and platelets that occur in this disease. Swelling of the affected person’s kidneys may result in a dangerous build up of potassium, sodium and phosphorus. This is known by several names, including hyperkalemia, hypernatremia and hyperphosphatemia. The excess of these chemicals cause the person to develop significant swelling in the limbs.
