Birth control pills
Birth control pills or OCPs (oral contraceptives) have become a very popular form of birth control . In fact, there are over 18.5 million women who are taking them as their primary method of birth control in the United States alone. Although many women are happy with their choice to use birth control pills, others experience adverse side effects that make it hard for them to continue taking them. One of the most concerning side effects, hemolytic uremic syndrome , is rare and often linked to the pill.
The use of birth control pills certainly does increase the risk of developing this condition, but only a small minority of women who develop HUS did so after using the pill. After accounting for other risk factors, it is unclear whether the pill alone is to blame in these cases.
