Kidney transplant

Kidney transplant is a procedure used to replace a kidney of a patient with another one that has been donated by another person. Kidney transplantation is an operation to move a healthy kidney from one person (the donor) to another person (the recipient). A transplant kidney is usually from someone who has died recently, but sometimes kidneys from living donors or from a deceased donor are possible as well. A patient whose kidney fails in functioning due to acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, or infection might need to undergo the procedure.

Kidney transplantation has shown prominent results and become the treatment of choice for many patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a cause of acute renal failure. The best candidates for kidney transplant in hemolytic uremic syndrome are typically children who have not yet had the opportunity to grow fully, but on the other hand, adults who have had shorter life spans because of acute disease episodes such as kidney failure caused by hemolytic-uremic syndrome should be considered as well.
