Pale skin is one of the common signs of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). You may have pale skin because you are anemic, as red blood cells (RBCs) transport oxygen to all parts of your body, including the skin. Pale skin also becomes a prominent symptom for your child when having hemolytic uremic syndrome. The color of their skin becomes pale and dull. This is because the red blood cells from the bone marrow are compromised and can no longer function properly.

This typically occurs within 24 to 36 hours after the onset of diarrhea in previously well children and adolescents. Severe generalized bone and joint pain often accompanies this skin discoloration, which is sometimes first noticed when the patient looks in a mirror or notices that a relative has remarked about their pale complexion.
