Fatigue is a common and important symptom of hemolytic uremic syndrome. It occurs in approximately 98% of patients with HUS, and is a sign that the kidneys are damaged. A patient with hemolytic uremic syndrome may experience fatigue due to damage to the central nervous system, destruction of red blood cells, and other factors. Fatigue also occurs in secondary forms of renal disease such as lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and toxic nephropathy.
