Melasma is a chronic skin pigmentation disorder in which due to the excessive production of melanin pigment, there is an appearance of brown, blue-grey, tan, and light blue patches on different body areas. The most distinct area on which the dark melasma patches appear is the face, which causes great emotional distress in several people.   • Bridge of the nose
  • Chin
  • Forehead
  • Cheeks (both sides of the cheeks are often involved)
  • Upper lip area

But melasma can also show up on other parts of our body too, like the neck and forearms. The main reason for dark patches appearing on the skin of the face is that most of the UV rays coming from the sun hit on the face and cause excess melanin production.
