Urethritis Prevention

Both men and women can take these steps and modify their lifestyles to reduce your risk of urethritis and other urinary tract infections:

Your body needs at least 2 liters (about 8 glasses) of water every day. Drink plenty of liquids, especially water. To help prevent a UTI, try drinking more water in place of other calorie-containing drinks, like sweetened soft drinks or alcohol. Drinking water and water-based products helps dilute your urine and help excrete more toxins out of the body – ensuring that you will urinate more frequently. It also allows bacteria and other pathogens to be flushed from your urinary tract before they can trigger an infection.

Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice is not only delicious, but it’s also loaded with health benefits. Cranberry juice is an excellent addition to your diet especially if you want to prevent a UTI. It contains beneficial antioxidants and vitamins such as vitamin C, which can help prevent urinary tract infection. Cranberry is a natural antibiotic that has been used in the treatment of urinary tract infection for years. Although studies and clinical trials are not conclusive that cranberry extract prevents UTIs, it is likely not harmful.

Wipe from front to back. When it comes to preventing UTIs, modern science has shown us the way. But more importantly, proper cleaning habits can be the difference between a lifetime of UTI-free living, and days of dealing with debilitating pain caused by the dreaded urethritis. To prevent urinary tract infection (UTI), you should wipe from front to back. Doing so helps prevent the growth of bacteria and spreading to the vagina and urethra after urinating or a bowel movement.

Empty your bladder soon after intercourse. Over 50 million Americans get UTIs every year and a significant number of these infections are caused by sexual intercourse. The female urethra is shorter than males which makes women more prone to urinary tract infection. Emptying your bladder soon after intercourse is proven to reduce the incidence of urethritis and other types of UTIs. Also, drink a full glass of water to help flush bacteria.

Avoid potentially irritating feminine products. Feminine products are a type of hygiene product used by women during their menstrual periods or other possible related vaginal discharges. They help to partially prevent absorbent blood or vaginal discharges from staining clothing, protect the skin and make it less prone to bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections. In addition, they make sure that exposed underwear is not stained, particularly in the case of light discharge. However, some of them are the most common causes of urethritis. Using feminine products can be uncomfortable, especially if you have a urinary tract infection. Using deodorant sprays or other feminine products, such as douches and powders, in the genital area can irritate the urethra.

Change your birth control method. Diaphragms, or unlubricated or spermicide-treated condoms, can all contribute to bacterial growth.
