Co-occurring medical conditions
Studies reveal that bipolar disorder patients are almost at a double or triple higher risk of developing heart disease and diabetes with the progression of bipolar disorder. Some bipolar disorder medications particularly antipsychotics can cause serious side effects. While the bipolar medications can save lives by controlling the symptom of the disorder, some drugs or combination of drugs can lead to chronic illnesses such as kidney problems, thyroid disorders, cancer, stroke, and many more. Experts also explain that bipolar disorder puts the bipolar disorder patients at almost 1.7 times more risk of getting obesity than the
general population. All these co-existing health issues further aggravate behavioral symptoms and shorten the life span of bipolar disorder patients.
