Chronic lateral ankle pain (CLA) is a syndrome that develops outside the ankle. Chronic lateral ankle pain is often caused by overuse or overtraining of the ankle, ligament, or tendon injuries. People injured or suffering from arthritis are more likely to develop CLA pain.

The symptoms of chronic lateral ankle pain can be debilitating. Pain is commonly felt on the outside of the foot and along the outer side of the ankle. The pain may be accompanied by swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the ankle. Symptoms can also occur in the knee or lower leg.

Treatment for chronic lateral ankle pain varies and depends on the underlying cause. Treatment options include rest, ice, medication, physiotherapy, stretching, and corticosteroid injections.
