Hip Tendonitis and Bursitis

This is perhaps the most common overuse injury of the hip you can endure as a participant in sports such as cycling, running, soccer, hockey, or football. Tendonitis and bursitis are more common after sustaining a sports injury, and patients will develop chronic pain, which is made worse when they return to the field.

Patients with hip tendonitis and bursitis can sometimes feel a popping or snapping sound while playing their favorite sport, followed by severe and sudden hip pain.

After this acute episode of pain, it can be relieved by rest, ice, and painkillers, and patients tend to apply the wait-and-see approach. But not consulting a doctor makes this pain go chronic, and hip tendonitis or bursitis develops.

Hip tendonitis is an inflammation of the hip tendon. The most common cause is an overuse injury, such as running or climbing stairs.

Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, a sac that surrounds the hip joint. The bursa helps reduce friction and protect the hip joint. It can occur due to several causes, such as arthritis, overuse, or sports injuries.

One of the most common types of bursitis is trochanteric bursitis, which affects the greater trochanter of the femur. In these cases, the pain travels through the lateral aspect of your thigh and sometimes radiates to the foot. The pain worsens when you lie on the affected side, walk, run, or carry weights.
