Inflammation in the joints of the spine may also trigger back pain. The most important causes in these patients include arthritis and infections. There are different types of arthritis, but they all feature inflammation of the articulation and sometimes degenerative changes that may consist of deformation of the affected joints. The pain is usually progressive, and patients tend to experience flare-ups that respond to their mood and dietary changes.

Inflammation may also result from an infection of the articulations. This is known as reactive arthritis. The symptoms are similar to other types of arthritis, but this one is easier to manage and can be cured with the administration of antibiotics.
