Remedies for pain

Unless or until osteoporosis calls for medical attention by resulting in a fracture, there is no other symptom, neither pain in the bones in general. But if osteoporosis is slowly eating at your vertebral bones, that is the spine, it can cause serious pain because of pressing of the nerves in between structures. It can give a stooped or hunched figure in the elderly. The postural imbalance may then further distort the weight such that, there may be muscle spasms. Some home remedies to diminish this pain can be:

  • Hot packs

Hot packs can be used to soothe the pain in the back or neck. Heat causes increased blood flow to the affected area and reduces inflammatory pain, and it improves the stiffness in the muscles. Heat has been used for ages for pain relief. Hot baths are also effective, but temperature maintenance in baths is problematic. Electric heat pads are now available that are convenient forms to be used while lying. These heat pads can be adjusted to the proper temperature. Heat application for 15-20 minutes can prove effective to counter the back pain.

A cautionary measure is to never put the heat source directly onto your skin. Wrap it in a cloth before placing it on the body. Do not use too much heat as it may cause damage to the skin. You can also make a homemade heat pack with rice in a sock. Put it in a microwave to heat it for a few minutes, afterwards it can be just as conveniently be used as a hot pad.

In case the injury is recent, cold packs are more effective for pain relief than hot packs. They limit inflammation in the area. Cold packs work by numbing the pain carrying nerves in the area. A homemade ice pack can be effectively used for this indication. A packet of frozen peas is another handy alternative. Apply the cold pack for about 15-20 minutes. It is better to use a towel as a barrier between the ice and skin to protect the skin from the cold burn.

In cases of recent fracture or healing from a fracture, supports for the bones are essential to limit mobility and prevent misalignment of the bones. Supports and braces for back and neck are available for this reason, which allow safe movements by padding the damages bone. It is advised to supplement braces with a safely devised exercise plan, so as not to make muscles lax and lazy.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy in osteoporosis can be done in the hands of an experienced person. Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning here because of its beneficial effects. A slow massage with low pressure can help reduce muscle stiffness, relax nerves and enhance circulation in the area. Passive movements of the bones and muscles can ensure mobility and decrease chances of friction.

A caution worth mention is not to apply deep pressure, because it can pose the risk of fracture to the already thinned and soft bones.
