Steroid Injections
Similar to other joints, steroid injections have been shown to relieve ankle pain significantly. Steroid injections are fast and effective treatments for pain, especially in cases of severe inflammation. Additionally, steroid injections are relatively safe, with very minimal risk of side effects.
Steroid injections for ankle pain typically involve a combination of corticosteroid medication and anesthetic. These solutions work together to reduce pain and inflammation in the affected area.
When doctors administer steroid injections in your ankle, they inject these solutions directly into the painful ankle joint. This provides targeted pain relief, rather than giving systemic drugs delivered throughout your body without being targeted to a single area.
Steroid injections for ankle pain are fast-acting. Most people experience significant relief after one injection, although symptoms may be reduced for up to a week after the procedure.
Some people experience slight pain or swelling at the injection site, but this pain usually does not last. In extremely rare cases, steroid injections may lead to infection or nerve injury, but you should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor because they vary between one patient and the other.
Your physician may replace the damaged bone with a prosthetic device. Foot and ankle surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. You’ll stay in the hospital overnight, however, for the first day following surgery. You’ll be asked to take it easy several days after the operation.
