The best way to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome is to follow a proper ergonomic method. Follow these basic recommendations:

  • Keep your wrists straight: Many people suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome because they bend their wrists while working, which builds up pressure in their wrists. To avoid this, keep your wrists straight while using your mouse or typing on a computer.
  • Avoid placing your mouse too close to the keyboard: If you’re working on a desktop computer, try to keep your keyboard and your pointing device (i.e., mouse) at opposite ends of the desk. This will prevent your wrists from bending and straining while working on the computer.
  • Stretch your wrists: Take frequent rests when working with your hands and do a few stretches. Rotate your hands in circles with your palms facing down. Do this for a few minutes to promote muscle relaxation.
  • Relax your wrists: Hold your palms together and gently stretch your fingers apart. Do this for about 5 minutes a day.
