The human body is remarkably strong, but injuries can interrupt this strength by weakening the structure of the joint. The most common injuries experienced by athletes are sprains from a sudden twist or fall. Ankle braces provide support to the most commonly affected area, preventing additional protection against muscle and ligament damage.

It helps in primary prevention because it reduces the chance of an injury. It also helps in secondary prevention when the structures of the ankle are already weak or affected by a previous injury. To wear an ankle brace correctly, just lace the device securely enough that your ankle won’t slip out of the brace but not too tight that you will compromise blood flow.

Ankle braces come in a variety of shapes and sizes. For beginners, a wrap-around brace may be appropriate. More advanced athletes and patients with previous injuries can use a more traditional ankle brace with high, stiff support. In any case, the ankle brace you choose must be comfortable. An uncomfortable brace will be ineffective and distracting, causing you to lose focus while exercising and becoming a problem for athletes and their mobility.
