Neuromuscular training refers to training the muscles and their connection with the neurologic terminals to improve their ability to move the joints in the body more precisely and safely. These exercises are performed to develop the strength and endurance of the muscles used during daily activities and sports.

If an athlete has a sprained ankle, then the first thing they should do is to stop participating in sports until the injury has been completely healed. The healing process can take several weeks or even months. During a late stage of recovery and before returning to play, part of the secondary prevention usually involves retraining the muscles to prepare for their return to sports.
