Everything You Need to Know About Ankylosing Spondylitis, Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Inflammation Of The Bowel

Bowel problems are common in people with ankylosing spondylitis. This condition can lead to colitis or inflammatory bowel disease. Both bowel diseases can cause symptoms like abdominal pain and cramps, bloody diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a severe urgency to have a bowel movement. Tell your physician if you have diarrhoea (with or without blood) for more than 2 weeks or you begin to pass slimy stools. You might be initially referred to a gastroenterologist (bowel specialist). Symptoms of colitis and inflammatory bowel disease can vary, but they can usually be treated with medications. Sometimes drugs like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can make your bowel symptoms worse, so you are advised to stop taking them or consult your healthcare provider.
