Tonsillitis: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments, Surgery and More

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is a common infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi that affect the soft tissues around your throat (including the tonsils). The tonsils are the two round lumps of tissue on either side of the back of your mouth. They help to protect the body by trapping germs that enter through your mouth and breathing passages. (1)

Tonsillitis causes your throat to feel sore and painful, like you have a really bad cold or sore throat. Other types of tonsillitis include peritonsillar abscess, quinsy and chronic tonsillitis. The infection can last for a few days or weeks, but it’s treatable with antibiotics. Some people get them repeatedly. If left untreated, the severe infection can lead to serious complications such as acute sinus infection and ear infection.
