In an older adult, even moderate hearing loss can double the risk of developing dementia. Moderate hearing loss increases 3-fold risk, and extreme hearing loss increases the 5-fold risk of both dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
The more the loss of hearing, the worse the likelihood and extent of dementia. So be sure to check for hearing protection for your older family members. This risk can be reduced by early intervention with a hearing aid. Staying involved with their surroundings and the people they care about is important for older brains. You have to make sure that your loved ones remain cognitively engaged throughout their lives by improving their hearing ability.
