Where you were born
People with fair skin born in a hot country, such as Australia, have an increased lifetime risk of melanoma. This risk is higher than people living in a hot country as a teenager or people living in cooler climates with similar skin coloring.
Fair-skinned people in hot countries may be exposed to the sun as a baby and young child when the body is most fragile. That doesn’t mean you are going to get melanoma. It just means you should be conscious of taking proper skincare when you are in the sun.
