Oral medications
Disulfiram (Antabuse) is a drug that may help prevent you from drinking, although it will not remove the compulsion to drink or cure the disorder. The drug produces a physical reaction if you drink alcohol, which may include flushing, nausea, vomiting, and headaches.
Naltrexone can block alcohol’s good feelings and thus can reduce the urge to drink and prevent heavy drinking. After you stop drinking, acamprosate can help you fight alcohol cravings. Acamprosate and naltrexone do not make you feel sick after you have a drink, unlike disulfiram.
