Vomiting and diarrhea cause rapid fluid loss. Drink plenty of water to replace this fluid loss. Stay hydrated throughout the day. Water loss determines the amount of water that needs to be replenished.

When you’re sick, consult with your doctor to determine how much fluid you should drink if you have certain medical conditions, such as heart failure or incontinence.

It may be difficult to keep fluids down if you’re nauseated. Sip small amounts of water as often as you can. Taking in more fluids by sucking on ice or frozen Popsicles may help.

Body hydration is achieved by drinking water. Yet, water alone does not provide the body with the salts it requires for fluid balance and other functions. A bout of diarrhea or vomiting requires the replacement of these essential salts.

Keep your body cool by removing excess clothing, staying in a shady area, or seeking an air-conditioned shelter.
