Leukocytosis
Leuko means white, cyte means cell, and osis is a suffix meaning increasing production. Thus, leukocytosis means to increase the production and the number of white blood cells in the blood. Leukocytosis occurs to strengthen body immunity against infections and doctors usually request for white blood cells count as a part of normal blood routine, especially if there is a suspicion of infection or inflammation. Increased white blood cells count is a not a specific sign to diagnose a disease as it can appear in all kinds of infection, inflammation, cancer or autoimmune diseases, so it is usually used for disease evaluation and progression rather than disease prediction.
