Probiotics for weight loss
The bacteria present within a person’s gut may have an impact on his weight. Research shows that obese people have lower bacterial diversity.
A small study found that individuals following a low-calorie diet for up to 15 weeks had experienced changes in their gut bacteria. They also noticed a reduction in bacteria that are associated with atherosclerosis (a condition in which the arteries become clogged due to plaque).
The links between gut bacteria and weight indicate that probiotics may be helpful in supporting weight loss.
Some experts have suggested that supplementation with synbiotics, using bacterial strains such as Lactobacillus gasseri, leads to weight reduction. Adding certain fibers may enhance these effects.
