Infection or autoimmune disorder

Any infection or genetic mutation resulting in the loss of hyprocretin-producing cells can lead to the signs of narcolepsy. As the immune system is the reason for the loss f specialized cells in the brain the scientists believe that the sleeping disorder of narcolepsy might categorize as an autoimmune disorder. One of the stimulating events related to narcolepsy might be the infection of the influenza virus and H1N1 virus specifically results in the development of narcolepsy. The lack of hypocretin chemical in the brain makes it quite difficult for a person to stay awake. The loss of hypocretin chemical also allows REM sleep to persist in the times when it normally does not occur.
