Emphysema Types

Emphysema is one of the types of COPD and there are further different types of emphysema depending upon which part of the lung is suffering from the disease. The degree of damage happening to lungs is also different among the three different types of emphysema. The three different types of emphysema are as follows: []

Paraseptal emphysema

Paraseptal emphysema is one of the conditions that refer to a morphological subtype of pulmonary emphysema locating adjacently to the septal and pleural lines. The pulmonary emphysema present in the pleural and septal lines with a peripheral division results in significant damage within the secondary lobule of lungs. The affected pulmonary lobules are around always sub-pleural. The affected lobules demonstrate small focal holes which are almost 10mm in size.  Doctors refer to paraseptal emphysema as distal acinar emphysema. Paraseptal emphysema mainly affects the upper portion of the lungs. Fluid-filled sacs known as bullae tend to form on the surface of lungs. If a person is suffering from paraseptal emphysema, the chances are quite extensive that you might get other forms of emphysema as well. Half of the people with lung problems and who smoke are more likely have more than one type of emphysema.
