Throughout pregnancy, maternal smoking tends to result in lower lung function in children compared with those whose mothers did not smoke. In addition, premature birth is a risk factor for asthma development.
According to the American Lung Association, children whose mothers smoke cigarettes during pregnancy are also at a higher risk of asthma than children whose mothers do not.
